Born in Tokyo in 1976, Horikichi is internationally known for his mastery of Tebori, the traditional Japanese hand-tattooing technique. Working without machines, he creates tattoos by hand that are vivid, fluid, and powerful — from large-scale full body suits to smaller, hand-sized pieces. His work carries both softness in shading and strength in composition, built to last a lifetime. In 2000, he began his apprenticeship at Apocalypse Tattoo, where he later worked as a staff artist for several years. After extensive travels, conventions, and guest work around the world, he settled in Amsterdam and became part of Schiffmacher & Veldhoen Tattooing, and later a resident artist at the Amsterdam Tattoo Museum. Today, he works at Black and Gold Tattoo, continuing to preserve and push the tradition of Japanese tattooing through dedication, craftsmanship, and deep respect for the culture behind it. William, better known as @cionka_tattoo , will be working at the Truly Yours Tattoo Fest 2026 — and we’re glad to have him with us. Originally from Florence, Cionka grew up in the punk hardcore scene, shaped by skateboarding, graffiti, and the wider underground culture that surrounds tattooing. That background still defines his work today: direct, honest, and rooted in something real. In 2012, he moved to Hamburg to learn tattooing from scratch. After many years of living and working there, he now splits his time between Florence and Hamburg, carrying influences from both cities into his work. Over time, he has developed a distinctive style that combines the boldness of Traditional tattooing with a modern, forward-thinking approach. Clean lines, strong and iconic imagery, and an experimental yet controlled color palette characterize his tattoos — always built to last, always solid. In den 1970er- und 1980er-Jahren begann die Tätowierung in der bildenden Kunst, sich als ernstzunehmendes Medium zu etablieren – zu einer Zeit, als sie gesellschaftlich noch stark stigmatisiert war.
Künstler:innen wie Timm Ulrichs und VALIE EXPORT nutzten Tattoos nicht als Ornament, sondern als dauerhaftes Statement am eigenen Körper. Die Haut wurde zur Leinwand für Fragen der Identität, Gesellschaftskritik und Selbstbestimmung. Ulrichs thematisierte Existenz, Endlichkeit und persönliche Reflexion, während EXPORT die Tätowierung als Mittel radikaler Kritik am Patriarchat einsetzte und den weiblichen Körper als Ort der Emanzipation sichtbar machte. Manfred Kohrs, selbst seit den 1970er-Jahren als Tätowierer aktiv und Zeitzeuge dieser Entwicklung, ordnet diese Phase aus kunsthistorischer und praktischer Perspektive ein. Manfred Kohrs ist eine lebende Legende der deutschen Tätowier-Kultur: 1975 lernte er bei Horst „Samy“ Streckenbach das Tätowieren, eröffnete 1976 das erste Tattoo-Studio in Hannover, gründete 1977 die erste Vereinigung deutscher Tätowier-Künstler und entwickelte 1978 ein neues Design für die elektrische Rotationsmaschine. Heute ist er Vorstandsvorsitzender des Instituts für deutsche Tätowier-Geschichte (IDTG) und arbeitet seit Jahren an der Auswertung des Nachlasses von Streckenbach. In seinem Vortrag stellt Manfred Kohrs bisher größtenteils unveröffentlichtes Bildmaterial zu Ruth und Hans Ullrich vor – zwei zentrale Figuren der deutschen Tätowier-Geschichte. Auf einer unscheinbaren Meldekarte des Ordnungsamtes Bielefeld steht: „Nebenberuflich ein bekannter Tätowierer“ – und dahinter verbirgt sich eine faszinierende Geschichte.
Erfahrt, wie Ruth und Hans in der Mitte des 20. Spätestens ab den 1920er-Jahren verwendete Christian Warlich eine chemische Tinktur, die eine Entfernung von Tätowierungen ohne operativen Eingriff ermöglichen sollte. Damit etablierte er ein Verfahren, das für seine Zeit außergewöhnlich war und weit über Hamburg hinaus Beachtung fand. In einer Epoche, in der Tätowierungen häufig als lebenslange Entscheidung galten, eröffnete Warlich damit eine neue Perspektive auf Dauerhaftigkeit und Reversibilität von Körperbildern. Grundlage des Vortrags sind Dokumente aus dem Hamburger Staatsarchiv, darunter Warlichs Stellungnahme gegenüber der Gesundheitsbehörde aus dem Jahr 1935. Darin beschreibt er detailliert seine Methode der chemischen Enttätowierung. Auf Basis dieser historischen Quellen konnte die Zusammensetzung seiner Tinktur erstmals rekonstruiert und wissenschaftlich überprüft werden. Der Vortrag ordnet Warlichs Praxis in die medizinischen, rechtlichen und gesellschaftlichen Rahmenbedingungen der Zeit ein. Er zeigt, dass Fragen nach Irreversibilität, Stigma und Verantwortung die Geschichte der Tätowierung seit ihren Anfängen begleiten – und bis heute aktuell sind. Ole Wittmann studierte Kunstgeschichte, Kulturanthropologie und Soziologie in Hamburg und promovierte 2015 über den menschlichen Körper als Bildträger für Tätowierungen. Seine Dissertation Tattoos in der Kunst erschien 2017. Er leitete das Forschungsprojekt zum Nachlass von Christian Warlich am Museum für Hamburgische Geschichte und kuratierte die Ausstellung Tattoo-Legenden. Christian Warlich auf St. Pauli.
